bulgaria gets its first budget flight from uk
News Posted On: 14 June 2010
British low cost carrier Ryanair is set to open up the first low-cost flights from Britain to Bulgaria from September this year.
The fees have previously been a major stumbling block preventing low cost carriers from servicing Bulgaria. However, a new venture has been set up surrounding the airport in Bulgaria's second largest city Plovdiv, and to support the venture the airport's fees have been halved for two years from May 1st 2010 to May 1st 2012.
The venture consists of several municipalities surrounding Plovdiv, namely Hissarya, Assenovgrad and Rodopi, which have teamed up to make better use of the massively underused Plovdiv airport to further their own tourism sectors, and bringing in budget flights is a vital part of this.
The government recently invested 40 million Leva in a passenger terminal at Plovdiv, which -- with the only flights coming into it being from S7 in Siberia -- is currently practically unused. This will almost certainly change if Ryanair becomes the first of many low cost carriers to fly to the airport.
Low cost flights to Bulgaria will almost certainly be a booster of growth in the tourism sectors of Plovdiv and surrounding areas, and also the property markets, which should see an increase in foreign interest.
A recent report into the Bulgarian property market by research agency Address said that, while Bulgaria property prices were still likely to fall further in the short term, over the long term property is still the best investment in Bulgaria. The report pointed to a 300% growth in Bulgarian property values over the previous 10 years.
