Britons who want to make the most of their money when taking a holiday might benefit from buying property in Bulgaria, a recent study suggested.
Conducted by Post Office Travel Services, the Holiday Costs Barometer featured Bulgaria in the number one spot.
It overtook Thailand, South Africa and Egypt, which used to occupy the top three places, to take the title.
Sarah Munro, Post Office head of travel services, commented: "The eurozone has taken a bashing this year but our survey suggests that tourist outlets in many resorts are taking dramatic steps to encourage tourists."
The study also indicated that holidays in long-haul destinations were becoming increasingly expensive, which might mean that more Britons opt for holidays closer to home, in places such as Bulgaria.
Those who own property in the country could benefit from good rental yields as more holidaymakers flock there.
Figures from the National Statistical Institute revealed that the average price of a home in Bulgaria's regional cities fell by 12.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2009.
