big news croatia could be 28th eu member by 2012

UK 20 October 2009 - The European Commission has said that Croatia's EU accession talks could be finished as early next year.
"If Croatia meets all outstanding benchmarks in time, the accession negotiations could be concluded next year," the Commission said in an annual report on enlargement. This would mean Croatia could potentially be the 28th member of the European Union by 2012.
However, the commission said Croatia still needs to improve its fight against corruption and organised crime, boost its judicial system and increase cooperation with the United Nations war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
"I think we can be satisfied (with the report). There is more effort to be made, but this is probably the last such report as we will certainly wrap up this job by mid-2010," Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor told reporters.
Croatia property has been severely hampered by the stalled EU accession, which some had come to believe would never go ahead. The country had become incredibly popular with overseas investors, with the potential price increases that accompany EU accession a large part of the reason for its popularity. Prices grew rapidly during this time. But when EU accession stalled, Croatia's then comparatively high prices led to it losing out to new EU potentials with lower prices and better prospects for accession.
That all changed recently when Croatia successfully convinced EU member Slovenia -- who had vetod Croatia's accession -- that it would not submit any documents which could be perceived as prejudicial to their border dispute.
Croatia property prices have fallen 6.1% since last year, and it does not lose out because of the strong Euro; you can currently get 7.95 Croatian Kuna for 1 British Pound. The effect of EU entry on the Croatian economy and property market will still be as massive as it was always going to be. This will lead to somewhat of a buying frenzy in the country as buyers attempt to get in while prices are historically low.
