croatia eu entry discussion postponed investors hope for resolution
News Posted On: 25 March 2009
The intergovernmental meeting on Croatia's accession into the EU, due to take place this Friday has been postponed until April 24th, with the hope that some progress will have been made on lifting the Slovenian veto. The Czech Presidency announced:
"Given the situation, especially regarding the efforts of the European commission, the Czech Presidency of the EU has decided to postpone the intergovernmental conference on Croatia's EU accession for April 24, expecting positive results."
However, yesterday in an interview published by Slovenia's news agency STA, the Slovenian President advised that Croatian officials should cool their bellicose rhetoric, he said:
"At this moment I see too much loud diplomacy, too many expressions that harm good relations. I think we should avoid that. Especially on the Croatian side, even among the highest ranking representatives, I notice the usage of terms and language that harm those relations."
People involved in the overseas property industry certainly hope the issue can be resolved and that Croatia can be accepted into the EU as soon as possible.
Julie Liddle a researcher with overseas property portal Property Abroad said:
"We are expecting a surge in the popularity of Croatia property if and/or when Slovenia gives a sign that it will drop its veto of Croatia becoming a full member of the EU. Full membership to the EU is expected to drive Croatia property prices upwards, as it has with all other countries that have joined the EU. Investors know this and that the early bird catches the worm, it is a safe bet many will pounce when full membership for Croatia looks certain."
Property Abroad is currently advertising dozens of properties for sale in Croatia , prices starting from £70,000.
