The Dominican Republic is an attractive destination for prospective property buyers from the US and Europe, it has been suggested.
According to Scott Medina, a real estate broker from the US, tropical destinations are desirable places to own real estate for US baby boomers and retirees from Europe.
He noted that many are looking to stretch their pensions as far as possible during the recession.
With high real estate taxes in the US and a struggling economy, locations such as the Dominican Republic could lure greater numbers of investors looking to make their euros and dollars go further.
Mr Medina said: "With every downturn, opportunity is always nearby. Terrific value can still be found in pristine Dominican Republic real estate."
Recent reports from the Dominican Republic's ministry of tourism indicated that 3.4 million guests visited the country last year.
The Dominican president Leonel Fernandez recently told an Economist Group-sponsored event that the island's property market is doing better than was expected in the economic downturn.
