uae signs open skies agreement with dominican republic
News Posted On: 05 October 2009
The General Civil Aviation Authority of the UAE has initialled an 'open' Air Services Agreement with the government of the Dominican Republic. The agreement allows unrestricted frequencies, capacity and types of aircraft, whether owned or leased, to be operated by the designated airlines of each country in any type of service, passenger or cargo, on the routes between the Dominican Republic and the UAE.
This is undoubtedly an attempt by those managing UAE tourism to increase visitor numbers in the hope of rescuing the beleaguered economy.
Tourism was very much a growth sector in the UAE, and despite the massive downturn that has all but destroyed property markets in the UAE, visitor numbers have fallen only slightly.
That said: the agreement will undoubtedly be far more beneficial to the Dominican Republic. This is because far more people from the UAE are travelling abroad for holidays than from the Dominican Republic.
This agreement could spark some serious investment in the Dominican Republic from UAE developers. Dominican Republic tourism has grown massively in the last few years, because of the low cost of living, and apartment-hotel complexes in the tourist centres have been very profitable. UAE developers may see this as an opportunity to rescue their balance sheets.
