Places of Interest in Estonia
Estonia is famous for its landscapes and its wines. But there’s more to this fabulous country than that. The country’s capital, Talinn, offers the pleasures of a modern major city, with the surroundings of the old mediaeval city, rivalling Bruge as a beauty spot. Elsewhere there’s sweeping scenery, from coastlines through placid lakes to deep forests. Estonians get to see a wide range of touring acts, from rock bands to the Moscow Ice Circus. And did we mention the wines?
Western Estonia is world-famous or its bird watching in Autumn and Spring, as it’s a key landing site for migratory birds which stop there in their millions. In Spring, the high water transforms the country’s landscapes, including those of the Soomaa national park, where travel by canoe can sometimes be done down the street as well as from island to island!
In Summer Estonia draws hikers and outdoorsmen from all over Europe, as well as fishers and people who want to try swimming in the country’s outdoor spots – lakes, rivers and the sea.
Tallin, Estonia’s capital, is a mediaeval city – but it’s also a thriving modern city with overlapping wifi hotspots across much of the city, luxury hotels and restaurants and nightlife to compare with anything in Europe.
There are high culture events to enjoy too, from museums to opera, from dance to art galleries. And the city can offer a world class hopping experience too: there are modern shopping centres and small boutique stores that permeate the Old Town in Tallin, just as they do in every major Estonian city.
We’ve assembled a list of the best of Estonia, to help you get the best out of your trip there.
