Capital City

Tallinn with a total population of 401,694 (as per estimates of 2006).

Language

Estonian is the official and most popular language in the country. Over 30% people can speak and understand Russian. However, after independence of the country, some considers the excess use of Russian offensive.

Electricity

AC 230 volts, 50Hz. Two-pin plugs (European Style) are commonly used.

Estonian Kroon (EEK, symbol Kr). 1Kr = 100 Senti

Notes prevalent = Kr 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 500

Currency Exchange

Currency Exchange facility is available at all bank branches and bureaux de change. For convenience of European travellers, the value of Kroon has been tied with Euro.

Credit/Debit Cards and ATMs

Credit/Debit/ATM Cards are accepted at all major hotels and shopping centres. Most Estonian banks also offer cash advances on credit cards along with the passport. ATMs are located at convenient locations all over the country.

Traveller's Cheques

Travellers Cheques can be exchanged in most banks in the large towns and cities. The travellers are advised to carry travellers’ cheques in major currencies, like Euros, US Dollars, Pounds Sterling etc., in order to avoid additional exchange rate charges.

Banking Hours

Banks in Estonia function from Monday to Friday from 0900-1600. Most banks are closed on Saturday. But bureaux de change is open from 0900-1500 on Saturdays and some are even open on Sundays. Major banks of Estonia include Hansapank, Sampo Pank, and Ühispank.
