France has a variable climate in different
parts of the country. In the north, it's temperate climate; while
in the northeastern part of the country, it's continental climate
with cold winters and warm summers; and the south has a warm Mediterranean
climate. The western coastal areas from Loire to the Basque region
have temperate climate with Atlantic winds bringing in lots of
rainfall throughout the year. The Riviera, Provence, and Roussillon
also witness a Mediterranean climate, while Auvergne, Burgundy,
and the Rhone valley have a continental climate.
Rainfall is generally quite good in the country with winters witnessing snow in some areas especially the moutainous ski regions of France. Talking about specific regions, for instance, The Jura Mountains have an alpine climate, while the hilly Lorraine has a mild climate.
The summer weather in France can be quite hot with the slopes of The Pyrenees renowned for their world-famous sunshine. However, inland areas of France are mild.
Some strong and gusty winds (like the Mistral) are not uncommon in the country.
Travellers should wear light clothes during summers and waterproof winter-wear in the mountainous region throughout the year. The winter clothing, like jackets and sweaters, must be worn to avoid chilly winds in the Mediterranean resorts.
