mexican president set to increase tourism
News Posted On: 09 March 2011
The Mexican president recently announced that he wants to make the country one of the top destinations in the world by 2018, and he's already signed a National Tourism Agreement that has a 10 point strategy which will enable this to be achieved.
One of the places which are being targeted for tourists is the city of Campeche which has already undergone substantial improvements to its infrastructure and commercial buildings. The city has a great sense of history combined with a relaxing beach culture, and has been tipped for a tourism boom for a few years now. While residents there may enjoy the slower pace of life there is no denying the recent increase in tourism.
A few years ago all property transactions used to be between local residents and Mexicans from other parts of the country, but this has all changed with increasing interest from foreign buyers. The government's response has been to pedestrianise the city centre and to put in place multi-language signs and some semi-permanent museum exhibits in disused churches and parks.
Campeche is capital city of the Yucatán peninsula which as yet is one of the least visited states. It's right next door to the state of Quintana Roo which has a number of very well-known beach resorts including Cancun. The government is also making improvements to other towns within the Yucatán Peninsula, as it recently gave pueblo magico status to the town of Palizada which enables it to claim funds to help develop tourism. Palizada is famous for its red roofed houses and a lovely riverside location, and it's also quite near to the World Heritage site, the Calakmul Biosphere which encompasses the ruins of an ancient Maya city.
