montenegro tourism and property to benefit from visa free regional travel
News Posted On: 16 November 2009
Montenegro's tourism and property industries could receive a massive boost from the end of this month, if a proposal adopted by the European Parliament for a visa-free system in the region is ratified by European Union interior ministers.
The deal will mean people no longer need visas to travel between Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia (which I presume includes Kosovo).
These schemes have been adopted in other parts of the world recently to great success. EU residents are able to travel throughout the EU without a visa, and this has been a massive boost to many economies.
For example: when Poland entered the EU it allowed thousands of Polish workers to travel to more developed countries to find better employment. They did this, and then worker remittances added another income flow to Poland's GDP. Revenues in the airline industry were also boosted as these workers travelled abroad and then home to see relatives. This happened in many new EU members like Bulgaria and Estonia.
That is of course on top of the obvious benefits like increasing regional tourism, which boosted revenues from the sector into GDP, and also boosted airline industries in many countries throughout the EU.
There will no doubt be a similar effect felt in Montenegro, which is one of the most popular tourism destinations (if not the most popular) in the Balkan region. Montenegro attracted the likes of Prince Charles and Lulu during its heyday in the eightiess. Since declaring independence from Serbia 3 years ago, that heyday has started to return.
