montenegro tourism sector to receive boost from regional tourism
News Posted On: 01 June 2009
Montenegro is expecting "a bumper year" of tourism according to experts. The country is to receive a new tourism market from the fledgling and contested state of Kosovo, and also increased tourism from Serbia, both of which are land-locked.
Serbia ejected Montenegro's embassy staff when Montenegro split their loose union in 2006. Relations were worsened when Montenegro recognised Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia, which Serbia is fighting tooth and nail including succeeding in a push at the United Nations to have the International Court of Justice investigate whether the declaration was legal under international law, and issue an advisory opinion on the matter.
Now, as Montenegro prepares to solidify that recognition by opening a consulate in Kosovo, which it says is in preparation for Montenegrin tourists visiting Kosovo, Serbia is surprisingly accepting Montenegro's out-stretched hand and relations are set to normalise between the two. Tourism from land-locked Serbia and Kosovo will then increase massively to Montenegro, which is famed for its world-class beaches.
"Montenegro was a big-hit with tourists in the 80's, attracting the world's rich and famous including Prince Charles. It started to regain some of this chic in 2006 after splitting from Serbia. Normalising relations with Serbia and forming them with Kosovo, will give the Montenegro tourist market a much-needed boost right now," said Les Calvert director of overseas property portal Property Abroad.com.
"Montenegro's growing tourism sector is one of the biggest strengths when it comes to overseas property investors buying in the country. Increased regional tourism bodes well for when international tourism growth resumes next year," he added.
Property Abroad.com is currently advertising dozens of properties for sale in Montenegro, prices start from £102,000.
