There has been a massive upturn in property investment in Panama, since they elected successful businessman Ricardo Martinelli as President in May, thus signalling a move away from socialism and towards bootstrap capitalism.
Panama's biggest increases in popularity have been from the US, the UK and other places where the government has turned to heavy subsidisation of industry and financial sectors, in a near socialist stance.
Add this turn of events to the fact that Panama is already receiving massively increased levels of investment in lieu of the canal expansion and you have one of the best places to make a property investment in the world in 2009.
Panama has long been one of the most popular destinations with American's, and has had the largest market share of American retirement property purchases. In recent years, tourism and property purchases from further afield have been growing massively as cheap flights made Panama a much more accessible location.
In Panama City there are clear signs that it is a world-class tourism destination of the future, with both a Trump Towers and Hilton sky-scraping hotel resort complexes currently being built. Panama's advanced and high-quality medical service have also led to it being one of the most popular destinations for medical tourism.
In terms of property investment, the low property prices are a massive benefit in Panama's favour, with investors able to buy into off-plan developments in the revered Panama City for well under £100k (studios).
