Poland is, however, probably best known as the birthplace of the mass political movement, when strikes at the Gdansk shipyard in 1980 led to the establishment of the Solidarity trade union headed by Lech Walenska. The year 1989 was a watershed year for the entire Eastern European sector with the establishment of the areas first post Communistic government in Poland.
Continuing its steps towards development, Poland joined the European Union and ever since, its economy has grown from strength to strength. The FDIs are flowing and slowly the unemployment rate is coming down, and the skilled professionals who left the country for greener pastures abroad are now looking back at the promise of their motherland.
