slovakia supports turkey in eu bid
News Posted On: 13 October 2009
Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico has said that he supports Turkey's bid to join the EU. Speaking in Turkey, Fico said he does not agree with the view that EU can not afford more enlargement; that all European countries should have the opportunity to join the bloc if it meets the necessary obligations.
Unfortunately for Turkey the real objection to its EU entry lies in whether or not it is a European country, measured against the yardstick of France and Germany that is.
There is little question on the fact that Turkey's accession into the EU would be massively beneficial for both the EU and Turkey, on an economic front and to Turkey's property market. France and Germany can also see this, but they want Turkey to settle for a privileged partnership.
Turkey is unwilling to settle for this, and is currently in the process of trying to make the reforms necessary to meet the EU stipulations for membership. One of its biggest hurdles was its bad relations with several neighbouring countries, especially Greece and Armenia.
However, Turkey's current government has repaired its relations with all neighbouring countries including Armenia but except Greece, and has also become a regional negotiator playing a vital part in repairing Syria-Iraq relations.
Fico and a group of Slovak businessmen attended a business meeting organized by the Union of Chambers & Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) to gather them with Turkish businessmen.
Speaking at the meeting, Fico said Slovakia welcomes the energy chapter, which is soon to be opened in Turkey's EU accession talks. He said Turkey would play a crucial role in Europe's energy security. FICO and. Fico also thanked Turkey for its unconditional support to Slovakia's NATO bid.
Turkish Finance Minister, who was another speaker at the meeting, thanked Fico for his support to Turkey in its EU bid and said that Turkey made significant progress in recent years, especially in political, economic and social transformation.
"I believe that Turkey will be a country to provide added value to EU and I think member states will appreciate it," Simsek said.
