turkey election 2011 brings akp third term as expected
News Posted On: 13 June 2011
Well, the Turkish election went pretty much as everyone expected it would, a convincing victory for the AK Party who will now lead Turkey for a third term. Of a strong 87% turnout, the AKP won 49.95% of the votes, giving them 326 seats in a 550 seat parliament.
Erdogan was hoping for 330 seats, which would have given him a super-majority in parliament. This would have allowed him to make changes to the constitution -- as laid out in the constitutional reform bill passed by referendum last year -- without any supporting votes from the opposition. Now he will need support, but certainly not very much. Still, adds a little bit of intrigue I suppose.
Analysts and experts had called a victory for Prime Minister Erdogan and the AK Party "all but a foregone conclusion", because of the economic growth, stability and prosperity the AK Party has brought to Turkey and, in the case of the latter, the majority of its people. For that reason their being proven right is as much a surprise as their making the claims in the first place.
Anyway, as you'd expect from such a strong victory, the consensus of opinion is that the Turkish people are generally happy with the result.
"That landslide victory for Erdogan proves that Turkish people voted for economic prosperity, social cohesion and democratic reform. Bravo!!", said a commenter calling himself Konstantinos on the Hurriyet Daily News website.
Erdogan and the 326 seat AK Party will now form a 4 party parliament, joined by opposition Republican People's Party, or CHP, the Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP, and the Peace and Democracy Parliament, or BDP, in the legislature.
