Dubai is the showcase of the United Arab Emirates: a glittering city of skyscrapers and malls rising out of the sea off the coast of the Persian Gulf. The city has a reputation as a playground, and it can certainly be one. There’s the Burj Khalifa, the world’s new tallest building, as well as inspiring sights like the Dubai fountains and the culturally significant Bastakiya quarter. If you get tired of shopping in the upmarket malls, there’s the traditional Souk to sample and the wooden boat taxis will be glad to take you there and back. Uniquely for a desert location this near the equator, Dubai even has a ski slope!
Just down the coast from Dubai is Abu Dhabi, a very different city offering very different experiences. There are art exhibitions and book launches, spoken word, music, theatre and more at dozens of venues in Abu Dhabi.
For lovers of the past there’s Al Ain, traditionally the garden city of the Emirates. It’s an oasis – the biggest in the region, with thousands of date palms - famous for its Camel Souk and for its views of Jebel Hafeet, the Emirates’ second tallest mountain. The Al Ain Museum and Fort cand show historic artefacts dating form the Fort’s construction by Sheik Zayed to protect the region from raiders. For young children, families and enthusiasts, there’s the Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort. You’re bound to find what you’re looking for in the United Arab Emirates!
